My Horrific Experience Teaching English in Vietnam
Hello, my name is Teacher Andrew and I am here to share my experience of teaching English in Vietnam. In this video, I will warn viewers about an agent named Jenny who deceives foreign teachers and forces them to live in substandard apartments. It's a terrible experience that I went through, and I want to advise others on what to watch out for if they decide to teach English in Vietnam.
Jenny's scams and her actions are tarnishing the reputation of the teaching industry in Vietnam, and I feel it's important to raise awareness about the dishonest practices by people like her. Therefore, I urge viewers to be cautious and avoid any dealings with such dishonest agents.
Moreover, teaching English in Vietnam may seem rewarding, but there are many challenges that come with it, including low salaries, language barriers, and cultural differences. So, it's crucial for anyone considering teaching English in Vietnam to do thorough research and evaluate whether or not it's the right fit for them.
In conclusion, I hope that by sharing my story, I can help potential teachers make informed decisions about teaching English in Vietnam. Remember to always be cautious and do your research before making any commitments.

    Something similar happened to me in China at a language school. But, the way I got out of it and turned the tides to my benefit is super crazy and messed up. But, I turned the situation around and made it work out GREAT for me!! How did I get out of it?? Well, the thing is I'm black and many of the parents and students preferred the white teachers. They didn't say it, but when I looked into my white collegues/friends classrooms, their classrooms were full vs. my class which had only a few students. Me and my friends went out to dinner and they told me these things and so did some Chinese friends. As messed up as it was, I didn't complain. Why? Because, even though I was teaching less classes, the school still paid me a BUNCH of money because it was in the contract LOL 🤣. So, while my white colleagues were being overworked and had to teach 30, 40, or even 50 hours compared to my 20 hours, I was out exploring, having tons of fun, enjoying food and going everywhere EVERYDAY with the MONEY to do it ALL!! I kept going out of town and everything! So, that's how I got out of my similar situation. Yes, teaching in Asia in general could be messed up for ANYBODY whether black or white if one is at the wrong type of school. As mentioned above, my white friends got screwed but just in a different way from me. We finally ALL left that school around the same time to where they didn't have any foreign teachers for a LONG time! Granted: The rest of China was AWESOME!!! I had a ton of fun in China and met a lot of great people outside of the school. The ONLY negative experiences I had was working at the school. The rest of China was dream-like!

    Well, yeah. If you want something done then do it yourself. If you need an apartment look for it yourself, because for many younger Vietnamese your apartment is actually can be considered decent or even good. (if that is the apartment shown in the video). Why would she pay for your room? The agent's job is to find you a teaching position.

    • @TopESLGames
      @TopESLGames 11 днів тому

      We discussed the apartment situation in advance. I had already lived in Vietnam and had clearly demonstrated my housing requirements to her. It was her responsibility to find suitable accommodation for me, as was agreed upon earlier. In the end, she made no effort to find appropriate housing. It is only because there are people like you who agree to live in terrible conditions without holding the agent accountable that people like this awful woman continue to run their business.

    • @DrBurdock
      @DrBurdock 11 днів тому

      @@TopESLGames i don't know why you trusted her with the apartment search and let her pay for it. Most rented places will require you to sign a contract and pay a deposit. They also need to register you with the police. This is the sad reality of this country, a poor customer experience is a norm even with the biggest companies especially when they work with foreigners, not to mention some petty 'agents'.

  • @user-ed8zf5zv5j
    @user-ed8zf5zv5j 14 днів тому

    The sad thing is that so many people get excited about going to Asia and securing a job before leaving their home country, but the people who've they possibly signed a contract with have little to no business ethics, or really any sense of ethics for that matter. Recruiting agencies are just headhunters who need to fil a position to make a profit, so they just need someone who cuts the mustard and fulfills some very basic requirements. You probably think that you can maybe check to see something like Google reviews and ratings related to some company when actually those are usually faked by many companies if you check and see how the accounts that wrote the review are relatively new and/or there are many reviews within a short period of time, especially from accounts that don't review anything else. *DO NOT SIGN UP WITH ANY OF THEM!!!!

    I had bad working experiences in Indonesia many years ago. My Indonesian bosses set a very high expectation and I felt it was very stressful. The students in the kindergarten school where I worked were very unruly. Even responsibilities that a teacher should not do like babysitting was also expected of me since my pupils were very young like younger than 3 years old. My Indonesian colleagues envied me a lot because they heard from my boss that I was paid with a very high salary while theirs are just low ones. I even got typhoid fever there and I didn't receive any sympathy from my evil Indonesian bosses. They blamed me for getting Typhoid Fever. I paid for my hospital bills and the most tragic part was they asked me to pay a big amount of money for my exit visa as at that time I had to go back to the Philippines since my work contract was about to end. So, from that experience I don't anymore work under a boss or work abroad. If ever I have to live abroad again, I want to live as a freelance worker because here in my home country, I have been working as a freelancer successfully and comfortably. Working under a boss is hell!

    Why are you using an agent to get you a job and apartment? She already paid for an apartment and you expect her to pay for a hotel room too? I don't understand what the scam is? You had to pay for lunch and transport? Normal You quit, presumably breaking contract, and expected to still get paid? Trying to sell you a motorbike? Also normal.

    • @TopESLGames
      @TopESLGames 22 дні тому

      So, I had already been to Vietnam and during all our negotiations, I made it very clear that it was important for me to live in comfortable conditions. Moreover, I showed photos and videos of the apartments I had stayed in while in another city in Vietnam. I conveyed that my housing should not be of a lower class. To which the woman of questionable morals stated that this was not a problem and that I would only need to spend one night in a hotel. In the end, she did not search for any suitable apartments meeting my criteria. Moreover, she did not pay for the hut where, according to her, I was supposed to live. No, it is not normal for a foreign teacher to pay for food in a school, nor for taxi rides that she organized. Again, this was not my initiative. It was also highly inappropriate for her boyfriend to offer an old, non-working motorcycle when I was staying in a hotel. We had not yet signed the contract, and, of course, she was obliged to pay for my work. I am astonished that there are people who do not value their work, are ready to live in a hut, and justify the actions of such a horrible woman of questionable morals and her boyfriend, a Muslim who betrayed the values of his faith. I thought Muslim people have straight rules about that aspect.

    Maybe it's a scam, but accusing two people of something without much proof, at least in this video, seems premature. The only apparent issue is that you didn't like the apartment they offered you. If you're going to accuse them of something, you should provide several pictures of the apartment and any correspondence where they specified what was promised. Did they guarantee a five-star apartment before you went there? Do you have emails detailing their commitments? If they simply said they would provide you with an apartment, then they haven't necessarily breached the contract. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding.

    The only horrifying aspect of this story is the sense of entitlement. Like which part was the actual scam here other than she said she was working on getting a better apartment? You tried to scam her by expecting her to pay for the hotel room you wanted. Then you say you pay for your own transport and food? That's how life operates in every country. Then there's the hide to mention a language barrier? Like what the actual fuck? You want to teach English in a foreign fucking country and then suggest English speakers may struggle to communicate with locals? How about learning some fucking Vietnamese to communicate with locals? And my God, the thought of having to adjust to different customs in a foreign country....

      Let's go in order. At that time I had already lived in Vietnam for half a year. And I had experience teaching English in the south of the country. And I clearly knew the local rules and realities. Living in a comfortable apartment was very important to me. And we discussed this aspect in advance. I clearly outlined my requirements for the apartment. And yes, she promised to find me a suitable option. We discussed my arrival in advance and the dishonest agent had enough time to prepare an apartment for me. Further, our agreement was that I would only stay in the hotel for twenty-four hours, no more than that. And I was only prepared for that expenditure. Third, we had no language barrier. Everything was clearly defined. Fourth, she offered to buy a refrigerator and a washing machine at my expense... in a horrible rented apartment... what's that if not bullying a foreigner? Fifth, she also didn't pay me for my lessons, which I had already done. Bottom line - her behavior was horrible, and completely disrespectful. And yes, you are absolutely right, it is very important for me to keep my dignity. I have worked in many different countries, including Africa and Nepal. And in no other country in the world I have encountered such horrible and disrespectful treatment of foreign teachers.

And there are a large number of college graduates who have difficulty finding a job. And about the salary, I surely can't expect it to be good. You had better land in the South first where people at that are more friendly and you should try to hear "special thing" about Vietnam before you jump directly in that chaotic society. I'm sorry to hear about your terrible experience teaching English in Vietnam. Unfortunately, stories like yours are all too common. As someone who has spent time in Vietnam, I want to warn viewers that the country is full of scams targeting tourists and locals alike - English teaching is no exception. Dishonest agents like Jenny take advantage of the high demand for native English teachers without concern for the teachers' well-being. Beyond just English teachers, Vietnam has a widespread problem with scamming tourists as well. From exorbitant taxi fees, to overcharging restaurants, noise, pollution, corruption, outright theft, travelers constantly need to be on high alert. Foreigners who are economic refugees with low/no self-respect live in Vietnam. Decent and ethical foreigners don't tend to visit Vietnam more than once due to all these troubles. Yet Vietnam eagerly hires ANY person as an English teacher as long as they are white / Caucasian, even if the teacher can barely speak comprehensible English or if English isn't their native language. The priority is having token white faces, not actual quality English instruction. It's a corrupt country for retards. So I agree with your warning - Vietnam can be a very challenging place for foreign English teachers or tourists. Do your research, talk to foreigners who have been there, and take all recruiting offers with a major grain of salt. I cannot in good faith recommend Vietnam as an ESL teaching destination or a tourism destination (unless you're flat broke and have no self-respect) given the risky realities on the ground there.

    How do you protect your Bachelors degree and other important paper documents from being damaged while backpacking around the world teaching English?

    • @TopESLGames
      @TopESLGames 7 місяців тому

      Well, I don't go backpacking. I work full time in different countries with all the necessary documents. That's why it's crucial to have a comfortable and secure place where you can feel at home. That's also the reason why I couldn't stay in the horrendous apartment that the agent I mentioned in the video offered me. And remember, never give your personal documents to an employer or agent even if they insist it's necessary.

    I too feel this aswell, I’ve been lucky to be in a decent language centre however they are very dishonest, ignore your issues and not pay you on time. I maybe lucky but I think Vietnam has been a disappointing experience by lack of care and dishonesty to foreigners who live and work here.
